The Golden Age
At its height, Sanniquellie unified eleven provinces stretching from the Sahara to southern Africa. The capital Fofanna grew to nearly 500,000 people — one of the largest cities on earth. Two million people flourished in Dioptara Province alone. The empire's hub-and-spoke economy centered on the Chambeshi River system. Dioptara's mineral wealth — copper, gold, and the sacred dioptase stones — funded infrastructure, education, and defense across all eleven provinces. Trade routes connected Sanniquellie to Ghana, Mali, the Hafsid states, the Swahili Coast, Kilwa, and Great Zimbabwe. When Mansa Musa made his legendary 1324 pilgrimage to Mecca — flooding Cairo with gold — his wealth traveled routes that Sanniquellie had helped build.
